I've always loved the general concept of how different each person looks and appears because that single 1% in our DNA differentiates us in many ways. That being said, there's a satisfying feeling once I capture the anatomy of a person's face so well. Faces tell so much about a person and their sole expressions can give life to a piece of artwork.

self portrait.
3d multimedia (newspaper, cardboard, colored pencil), 24x30.
i wanted to convey myself in this piece. for a while i thought about my interests, hobbies, stuff like that. but then i started thinking more in depth of who i really am, myself in my upmost authenticity, a way I can show who i am in a completely non-opinionated way. I am a proud palestinian muslim woman. with that comes a lot of history of beauty and hardship and I needed to showcase that in my portrait. the background represents the struggle and the war and the ethnic cleansing that my people have had to endure. since the war is ongoing, i decided to make the background black and white to blend everything dating back to the 1940s-present together. the lower boarder represents the beauty of palestine—the culture, the food, as well as the rich history, etc. with the intention of making that part of the piece colorful to bring life and positivity in contrast with the background. the doves circling myself represent hope, peace and freedom and have been a massive symbolism for palestinians for decades. i am the centerpiece, i stand out with my bright red hijab and i wear pride on my face. everything in the piece represents the person that I am and forever will be.

this piece was a little light hearted and fun. i took some time for to go on a coffee date and spend time with myself and take a break from everyday life by making a piece of art that would elevate the stress of every day life.

food brings people together. i wanted to capture a tiny moment that might be deemed as normal and insignificant to others. brothers move out. children grow older. but small moments can never be redone.
